Difficulty Creating Your Resume

Are You Having a Difficult Time Creating Your Résumé?

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost,
whom the Father will send in my name,
he shall teach you all things,
and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
John. 14:26

ChangingResume-JobSearchingCoach“How’s your résumé coming?”

“Well, to be honest, I’ve been working on it literally for months now. Seems like I’m always finding something else to tweak.”

Does that sound like you?  Do you have nit-picker’s disease?  Things you write – in this case, your résumé – are never quite good enough, never quite done.

You are not alone, even in your job search…

One of the things God wants you to know and base your life on, is the fact that you are not in it all by yourself.

  • In John 14, Christ tells His disciples, and by extension, you and me, that when He leaves, the Holy Spirit will come to guide them.
  • In Matthew 28:20, the Scriptures tell us, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
  • In Psalm 23 we learn, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”

The message is consistent and clear:  we don’t live life left to our own devices, we have supernatural resources in the very person of the Holy Spirit residing in us to give us wisdom, insight, and guidance.

What is true of life in general is also true of your job search: He not only guides in some generic, everyday-life kind of guidance, He is there in the details, in the small decisions, and in the nuts and bolts.

The nuts and bolts includes your résumé…

DescriptiveResume-JobSearchingCoachYou don’t get any more detailed than that.  And His presence and guidance isn’t just superficial help. God actually helps you, empowers you, guides you in writing your résumé. Read that last sentence again…He is there in the writing.

Do you think that if the Holy Spirit is guiding that you need to be constantly nit-picking it to death? I don’t. Of course, you have to be thorough, you have to be precise, you have to be descriptive, and you have to be accurate.  Of course, you also need to tailor your résumé to fit the requirements of different positions. But that is not the same as nit-picking.

Nit-pickers change the same word 5, 10, or even more times and still aren’t satisfied. Nit-pickers rewrite sentences over and over and over ad infinitum, and still aren’t satisfied. Do you think the Holy Spirit nit-picks? I don’t.  If nit-pickers wrote the Bible, we would still be waiting for the final version.

So how are you at nit-picking your résumé? Maybe it’s time to trust the Holy Spirit, trust the feedback of others, and trust yourself that it says what He wants it to say.

Father of precision, you created me with certain strengths, but I may take some to an extreme in my nit-picking.  Help me trust.
