How to Make All the Decisions That Go With Your Job Search

A job search is a plethora of necessary decisions.

• Which ads should I respond to?
• Who should I network with?
• What should I include on my résumé?
• What interviews should I attend?
• Which job offers should I accept?

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the need to make decisions and put your brain in neutral to just coast for a while and not take it all too seriously. At the same time, each decision seems to be of utmost importance and feelings that your entire job search may hinge on that one decision weighs heavily on you.

Here’s some good news…God is at work and is going to bring His plan into being so you can substitute trust for worry, belief for anxiety, and commitment for discouragement.

However, this doesn’t mean you just sit back and trust, believe, and commit while you wait. God expects you to be diligent at crafting your résumé, disciplined in reaching out and networking, and prepared to enter into interviews.

He still expects you to your part and do the work…

But then He desires that you leave the results and the unfolding of the plan in His hands. So how do you substitute:

• Trust for worry: Look at developing a résumé that effectively represents who you are and what you can do.  Respond to the ads that appear to be the best fit. Touch base with all kinds of people because you never know which one He will work through. Then set worry aside and let Him work.
• Belief for anxiety: While doing all the work to conduct your search, it’s easy to think it all rests on you. Instead, do your part and expect that God will do His part, and maybe in some unexpected ways. Ponder the idea that God is at work, and let your anxiety dissolve away.
• Commitment for discouragement: You may start out your search committed to the concept that God is at work, but as the days go on, this commitment fades and discouragement sets in because you don’t see anything happening. Remember, you have limited perspective. You can’t see what God is doing. Commit yourself to the adventure with God, not just to getting a job, and your discouragement will flee, because each day is a new adventure.

Is it time to be renewed?

So, how’s your trust, your belief, your commitment?  Maybe it’s time to get renewed.  God is at work.  He will open your prison door.
