When Is The Best Time To Get A New Job?

“There is no fear in love.
But perfect love drives out fear,
because fear has to do with punishment.”
I Jn. 4:18

They say the best time to get a new job is while you have a job.  They say employers are more interested in having someone that is current working. “But I’m not currently working,” you say. “I’m currently unemployed and have been for several months. What hope do I possibly have?”

For many, these kinds of thoughts derail an effective job search effort. Thoughts like these hamstring the mental energies needed to conduct a robust search effort.

Unemployment…

At any given time in the U.S., approximately 6-8% of the adult population is unemployed.  With an estimated adult population of 150 million, that means around 9-12 million folks are in the unemployed category. And employers hire unemployed folks all the time.

One day a couple of years ago, there was a report circulated in the national press that indicated over the previous 12 months, 7.5% of the workforce in the U.S. had been laid off–dramatic news that captured the attention of the public.  What was not reported was that during that same 12 month period, employers had hired around 5% of this same workforce. The net effect was that the unemployment rolls grew by only 2.5%.  That figure is not nearly as newsworthy, so it is seldom reported.

Replace Fear with Trust

The real enemy you need to contend with is not the idea that employers prefer hiring currently employed people, but rather the fear that you won’t find work in a timely fashion.

The enemy of your soul wants to see you handcuffed by fear, because then you  aren’t focused on the One who looks out for your well-being, the One who knows what you need before you ask, the One who is working on your behalf at this very moment, preparing a new place of work for you.

So take heart, trust in Him, and when those debilitating, fearful thoughts start to crop up, focus on the following instead:

• God’s perfect love for us casts out fear.
• Psalms 37:4; God will give you your heart’s desires – not what your heart desires, but the desires themselves
• Matthew 6:33; Don’t worry about tomorrow because God knows what you need and will provide

Don’t let fear hold you captive. Let love free you. Let God’s adventure bring new meaning to your search.
