Do You Let Your Personal Circumstances Get In The Way Of Your Job Search?
“And who knows but that you have come
to your royal position for such a time as this?”
Esther 4:14
Does it feel like life just keeps throwing up roadblocks that get in the way of a successful job search? Do your life’s circumstances seem to keep you down and hold you back from searching for that perfect job or career? Or are you allowing them to to do so?
Negative Circumstances to Positive Outcomes
Consider the circumstances these strong people found themselves in, how they faced them, and what their outcome was:
Joseph was hated by his brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused and thrown into prison over a 13 year span. These were dire circumstances God used to propel him into a highly influential position as Prime Minister of Egypt. Quite a job history for a lowly shepherd’s helper. (Genesis)
Esther was orphaned as a young child, raised by her cousin Mordecai, won a beauty contest to become the next queen without her Jewish heritage being known, informed the king of a plot to take his life, and became the only thing that stood between the king and a plot to destroy all the Jews. Quite a set of circumstances to save the Jews. (Esther)
David killed Goliath as a teenager, had Bathsheba’s husband Uriah killed as an adult, had an affair with Bathsheba, survived the attempt to overthrow his reign by his son Absalom, muddled through the rape of his daughter Tamar by his son Amnon. Quite a bleak set of circumstances for a man after God’s own heart.
How can you use your circumstances?
Yes, God does use circumstances to direct our steps.
The problem is we often only see this in hindsight. Seeing it while it’s happening takes a large measure of faith, trust, and alertness to the Spirit’s promptings. Even then, it may only be proven as the future unwinds and events unfold.
However, by keeping an open mind to possibilities, seeing current events in your life as opportunities, and not trying to predetermine outcomes, you will be more likely to consider alternatives you might not have previously.
Don’t try to box God in. He likes to color outside the lines and take you down paths you might not anticipate. Your job search may be one of those.
Stay alert * Stay open * Stay flexible.
God of possibilities, help me not to limit you by my spiritual nearsightedness, and open my eyes to opportunities all around me.
