Job Search And Good Works

Use Your Job Or Job Search To Do Good Works

“For we are God’s handiwork,
created in Christ Jesus to do good works,
which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Ephesians 2:10

GodsWorkmanship-JobSearchingCoachYou are God’s workmanship. You are created for good works. You are to be about this business wherever you are, in whatever else you are doing.  Isn’t that exciting! Wherever you are, you have the opportunity to do good in Jesus’ name.

  • You are His emissary.
  • You are His ambassador.
  • You are His spokesman.
  • You are His workmanship.
  • You are His unique creation with the unique ability to do unique works because of the unique combination of skills and abilities He has built into you.

Don’t try to be like someone else, be you!

Sure, use others as models and mentors when they are worthy of this attention, but don’t try to be like them. You have no idea the struggles, challenges, and temptations they face. Look at them for ideas and inspiration–then go out and do your own unique thing.

Even when unemployed? Even when unemployed. Even in the midst of a challenging job search? Even then.  You will find opportunities during this time you won’t find at other times. Take full advantage of them. Exploit them to His glory.

UseJobToDoGood-JobSearchingCoachBeing created for good works means you are about the business of watching for opportunities to do good, to help, to cheer, to encourage, to comfort, to carry a burden for another. Watch for these in the normal course of your day. People are all around who are in need.

Be about the business of good works…

The interesting thing about this verse, and others of a similar nature in the New Testament, is that it positions this kind of activity as your primary work. Doing good is what you are to be about; all other work is secondary.

You may earn a living as an engineer, a teacher, a bus driver, but your calling is to do good works in those venues.  Your job may be a vehicle for you to do good works among people who have no one else.  You may be the only vessel God has placed in that location for this very purpose. Think about that!

That should give you pause, and help you to view your job and your unemployment with heavenly eyes. To see yourself in a whole new light…. You may be a light shining in a dark place.

Let’s light it up!

Father of light, help me not to be so caught up in my need that I forget I am a light to those around me.
