How To Calm Your Job Search Anxiety
“Do not be anxious about anything,
but in every situation, by prayer and petition,
with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
Phil. 4:6
As Christ said to Mary, “… you are concerned about so many things.”
That is true of all us as well. Some people have made anxiety an art form, but we all do it to some degree. And the problem is, so many of the things we worry about are out of our control and are statistically not likely to happen.
So what does that say about us?
Are we just not happy if we aren’t worrying?
Do we find it difficult to believe good things will happen?
I have this recurring worry, and every time we return home after a trip, I expect to turn into our cul-de-sac and see that our home has burned to the ground. I have never experienced my home catching fire. I don’t even think I know anyone whose home has burned down…Rational? No. Yet, there it is.
You probably have anxious thoughts about your job search also…
You may worry and ask such questions as:
- Will I be able to find a job?
- Will I find a job that is interesting and fulfilling?
- Will I find a job that has a salary high enough to pay my bills?
- Is my résumé any good?
- Is God really involved in this process?
- Does God really hear my prayers?
- …and a myriad of others.
Worry is a part of the human condition and can in fact be the stimulus to make you better. The first string on any sports team are always a little worried about the subs waiting to take their place, but this helps them reach down inside to maximize their own abilities.
When worry becomes more and is debilitating, know that the enemy is using it to defeat you. He wants you to think God isn’t involved and you can’t do it. Then he’s won. Don’t let him do that. Now is the time to dig in, stop your worrying and maximize your God-given abilities. With Christ in you, you can do it!
