How do you handle success? When things are rough, when your job search goes on and on and on it’s easy to remember to call on God for strength, wisdom patience. But when things turn around, when you get that new job, when things are going splendidly, do you remember God at that time?

Chuck Swindoll has stated,

For every 100 people able to handle adversity, there is only one able to handle prosperity.”

Joseph is a good example of one who did handle both adversity and prosperity well. When you read his story in Genesis you find someone who was very much human, but you also find a man that was true to God. When he was a slave and in prison he stuck to his beliefs and kept his faith alive. When he was promoted to Prime Minister of Egypt he knew God’s hand had been on the entire journey and he still kept his faith central.

How to remember gratitude during success…

The following will help you keep it all in perspective when you are on top:

  • God is love; He doesn’t change when things are going ill or when things are going well. He loves you all the same.
  • All things work together for good. We often refer to this verse for encouragement when clouds are black, but it also hold true when skies are sunny. Stay tuned to how God may want to use you during the good times.
  • It’s all God’s adventure. Most adventures will have both challenges and blessings, but they are all God’s adventures and He wants to use them all. Whether skies continue sunny or suddenly turn stormy, it is still His adventure and His story.
  • It’s not your strength. Don’t make the mistake of thinking it was your strength or cunning that brought you success or keeps the successes coming, any more than it may have been your mistakes and failures that led to your losses. It is all in God’s hands, and His determination. Your performance does not guarantee success or failure.

Whether you succeed or fail it is all about the Lord. Whether you achieve accolades or reprisals your spiritual disciplines and focus should remain constant.

Remember this when your success comes, and it will come!

Father of sunny skies, when things are going well I may not pay You as much attention as when things are going poorly. May my spiritual barometer remain constant in both.
