How Does Your Self Talk Affect Your Job Search?
“Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober,
set your hope on the grace to be brought to you
when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.”
I Peter 1:13
What are you envisioning about the outcome of your job search…is your self-talk positive or negative, and what is it’s source?
As human beings, we have amazing mental capabilities. We can envision something in our minds and make it a reality, whether a painting, a sculpture, or a complex piece of machinery. We can solve problems and craft verse, alter reality and envision possibilities, set up mental image goals and change our self image.
At the same time, our minds drive us to other ends. Given a boring procedure or time period, we will alter the procedure to be more creative or fill the time with some other ingenious activity.
We also fight battles in our minds. Who hasn’t had to do battle with such things as chocolate, pride, lust, and a host of other worthy combatants. Losing weight, exercise, self-discipline, overcoming temptations are largely battles of the mind.
Your mind will be active in your job search as well.
You will want to give it plenty to think about, and Your Road to Damascus provides plenty of activities for that purpose. But there will still be times when other, negative messages invade.
Messages like:
- God is not really active in your search.
- You’re in this on your own.
- If you hadn’t <you supply the what> you wouldn’t be here.
- You’re going to run out of money and be on the street.
- You are not going to do well in your search.
- What you have now is as good as it gets.
Many of these messages may result from fear, but remember, God really is in control and all will work together for your good. Many of those negative messages may also be whispers from Satan to get you sidetracked, derailed, and undermined.
Let your knowledge of God influence your self talk…
Believe what you know to be true:
- God loves you.
- God is engaged with you.
- God has given you His power.
- He is preparing you.
- He is at work.
- He is opening doors.
- He is guiding.
- He is bringing things together.
- He is preparing a place for you.
Great Creator, thank you for the miracle of mental abilities. May I use my mind to envision all you have in store for me.
