Do You Recognize Vocational Opportunities Placed Before You?
“The blessing of the Lord brings wealth,
without painful toil for it.”
Proverbs 10:22
As you look ahead in your job search, you no doubt ask the Lord to guide and direct you, and that you will be alert to that guidance. And rightly so. That’s always a good thing to do.
However, as you look back over your vocational history, you may not recognize or acknowledge that God has been guiding you all along, placing opportunities in your path…
- He has opened doors for you to step through.
- He has guided.
- He has led.
- He has used all the stops on your career road as part of His curriculum plan for your development.
Do you recognize opportunity?
Whether you knew it or not, whether you were fully cooperating or not, whether the various stops were as a result of your own decisions and actions or those of someone else, He has been at work, developing your spiritual maturity, enriching your personal character, and refining your practical skills.
What he did for Joseph, He is doing for you also. Joseph left home that fateful day in Genesis 39 as a shepherd, or maybe just a shepherd’s helper, to go check on his brothers taking care of the family herd of sheep. Thirteen years later, Joseph had mastered the skills, through his stay in Potiphar’s house as a slave and as an inmate in Pharaoh’s prison, to be the Prime Minister of Egypt.
How do you respond to opportunity?
The two primary actions that determined his direction were taken by other people. However, how he responded to the opportunities that were presented was all his own making…he had to open his own door.
As you read the account through Genesis 39-42, you find a couple of phrases repeated: “the Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered,” and “the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success.” Others saw Joseph’s abilities through his success and provided additional opportunities.
Just as God was writing Joseph’s résumé and developing his skill set, He is doing for you as well. You may not see it in the present, and you may not even see it in hindsight, but trust Him in the process and the result.
And God will bring your vocational fulfillment without it even seeming like work because you are doing what you were designed to do. You are using the gifts, abilities, skills, talents and all that He has blessed you with. Are you ready to open your doors to opportunity?
