How Can You Overcome the Obstacles of a Job Search?

How do you look at the process of your job search? Is it something you must do on your own, or is it alright to look for help as you search?

Many of us have grown up and been nurtured on the concept of the strong, carefree, independent individual out to conquer new lands. We have the image of the pioneers in a Conestoga wagon heading west, overcoming all obstacles, to forge out a new life.

And this idea has carried over to our Christian life.

Even the idea itself is completely erroneous. The westward movement was one of dependence, not independence.  The only way to overcome the obstacles they would face was by drawing on the combined resources of their community.

Dependence or independence?

So it is in the church.  It’s to be one of dependence, not independence. We are all to become “mature in the faith” until we are able to help each other reach maturity (Eph 4:16).  And it’s not just teaching; it’s much more dynamic.  The “one another’s” of the New Testament reflect this perspective. They include:

• Encourage one another
• Bear with one another
• Confess to one another
• Serve one another
• Pray for one another
• Love one another
• Accept one another
• Instruct one another

And there are many more; in fact there are over 50 references to “one another” in the new testament. Life in the Body of Christ is a dynamic, growing reality. You don’t do it alone.

You don’t have to do your job search alone…

The same is true in your job search. The tendency is to try and do it alone, but you can’t do it alone. You need mentors, advisors, counselors, network contacts, references and more to assist you in your transition.
