Job Loss Pain

How To Overcome the Pain of Job Loss

“Night pierces my bones;
my gnawing pains never rest.”
Proverbs 30:17

JobLossPain-JobSearchingCoachPain is a constant in the human condition. Oh, you may go days and sometimes even weeks without pain, but then it raises its formidable head again. And it comes in so many forms:

  • Physical pain from injury, accident, or disease
  • Emotional pain from real or imagined relational difficulties or violation of inner standards
  • Financial pain from overextended debt or significant reduction of income (job loss)
  • Relational pain when a significant relationship goes off-track, is broken, or strained
  • Spiritual pain from doing, or failing to do, something as prompted by the Holy Spirit
  • Circumstantial pain from watching situations unfold where others are bound to be impacted negatively

Although each type of pain feels different,

All pain is also somewhat similar…

One thing all of these have in common is the heightened awareness that you really have so little control over your life.

Another thing they have in common is the heightened awareness of your need for a transcendent power to walk with you through your painful experience.

The loss of a job falls into several of these categories and it is a situation your Heavenly Father uses to draw you closer to Himself. But you must be willing.

God doesn’t make the pain go away, or give you a by-pass to go around the pain. A quick examination of the life of Christ and other biblical personalities confirms that. What He does provide is a resource in the person of the Holy Spirit to bolster your inner person to see it through, and fellow travelers in the Body of Christ, the church, to commiserate and encourage.

Unexpected gifts…

JobLossGift-JobSearchingCoachHave you acknowledged the pain you feel with regard to your loss of a job? Can you describe the daily pain you feel of working through the details of a job search and the rejection that comes with it? Can you begin to see these as gifts from God?

In your present pain are you drawing on both the resources of the Holy Spirit and those of the church Body?

Holy Comforter, I must confess there are times when I am content to wallow in my pain. Help me to draw on the resources you provide.
